Microsoft Academic Alliance Software FAQ
Many technology courses have computing requirements above and beyond other online
courses you may have taken. Please review this page to insure you have the computing
power to successfully start the course.
Internet Connection
- A stable internet connection is required
- An e-mail account that you can access and check on a regular basis is
required. You should be able to send and receive mail and attachments with
this account. The lakelandcc.edu domain should not be blocked or deemed
junk mail or spam
- We strongly recommend you use your LCC student email account. This will help both you and your instructor. Most email will be send to your mail.lakelandcc.edu account. Some instructors do not accept e-mail from students’ personal accounts, so check with your instructor before e-mailing from Gmail, hotmail, and so on.
- Accessing your Lakeland student:
- Via myLakeland: Login to myLakeland using your eight-digit LID and six-digit PIN. (Your six-digit PIN is your DOB, unless you’ve changed it.) Then, click the Student E-mail icon under the clocktower at the upper right. Or, go to the Student tab. The “Student Email Center” is in the first column; second Channel.
- NOTE: Your e-mail name can be found in the Personal Information section of your myLakeland account.
- A 56Kbs or faster internet connection. For some courses, a high speed
connection (DSL, Cable modem or LAN) may be needed for larger files.
- Internet Service Provider (ISP) Note: If your ISP provides a customized
browser (for example: AOL), you should download a new, non-customized
version for your online course work.
- We have found that customized browsers can cause many problems
in the online course environment, including properly submitting
exams & assignments.
- We have found that browsers other than the current versions of
Microsoft Internet Explorer (8.x) do not always work correctly in the online course
environment
- Internet Explorer Version 6 will no longer work in the online course environment
- Current anti-virus/anti-malware (spyware) and a personal firewall.
- It is strongly recommended that you install and maintain this software
on your home computer to avoid infecting yourself and others with computer
viruses and worms. You can read more here: Help Desk Info on PC Infections.
- Please update your internet security application and firewall protection
often.
- As before, make sure you are not blocking any lakelandcc.edu site.
Computer Literacy
Students are expected to have some degree of computer literacy to succeed
in an online course. These tasks include (but are not limited to)
- keyboarding and word processing
- a sound knowledge of the procedures for sending/receiving e-mail, including
e-mail with attached files
- a sound knowledge of navigating and conducting information searches within
the World Wide Web
- a fundamental familiarity with common computing terms/activities, including (but not limited to): operating system, click, right-click, cut/copy/paste, browser, file locations, creating/naming/renaming files and folders, and file extensions.
- general familiarity with their own hardware, software, and operating
system environment
Each course may have specific software you are required to use. Please check
with your instructor for additional information.
Technical Support
Technical support will be provided for issues relating to the Blackboard Course
Management System (logging in, passwords, and so forth). You are encouraged
to call/e-mail the help desk (see the main
Blackboard page for current numbers) and your instructor if there are problems.
No technical support can be provided for virus software, firewall installation
and configuration, operating system, optional software, home networking, or
non-course related hardware/software issues. Your instructor may provide help
as appropriate for course-related software. Please note that any information
provided by the instructor is advice only. This is simply because we don't have
your computer in front of us, and don't have control over other technological
elements (networks, routers, printers, peripherals) that you do. So as with
any advice -- don't follow it blindly. Be careful. Use common sense. If you
are not sure about something, ask. You may need to "rent-a-geek" to
help with installation. If you still aren't sure, you may need to find a class
that doesn't require software to be installed on your computer.
